ARTIST BIO

Jan Pittman grew up in Western Australia, and has been painting the native wildflowers and trees, especially their sculptural fruits, since 2008. She lives in Gidgegannup, and is a member of the Watercolour Society of WA, as well as the Botanical Art Society of Australia, the Australian Guild of Realist Artists, and the Wildflower Society of WA. Specialising in botanical art, she has won awards and prizes at a number of local shows and exhibitions. The former Premier of WA, Colin Barnett, used one of her paintings, of the Western Australian Christmas Tree, for his Christmas cards in 2010, and another of her paintings, of Eucalyptus erythrocorys, for his 2015 Christmas cards. In 2015 Jan travelled to China with members of the Watercolour Society of WA, where an exhibition of their paintings was held, and she enjoyed the experience of painting in a totally different environment. She was a finalist in the Mortimore Prize for realistic painting in 2012, and the inaugural Splash Award for Contemporary Watercolour in 2018. She also paints animals, birds, portraits and interesting objects, such as artefacts collected by her great-grandfather, a Scottish sea-captain, who settled in the Swan Valley in the late 19th Century, to grow grapes! In June last year she travelled to Italy with members of the Watercolour Society for an exhibition of watercolour paintings.
