Flotsam by William Ritchie

Features

ARTIST NOTES: "Flotsam" Eastern long-necked turtle, oil on linen board (40 x 40 cm).

On warm sunny days it's common to see these turtles sunbathing in waterholes. They often haul out on logs and rocks, but when real-estate becomes premium, they float on the surface in the sun with their shells protruding to warm their bodies. I like the way they stretch out and poke their noses above the water like a snorkel, it all seems so relaxing as they float along as though cast adrift.

In this particular painting, I used a fairly restricted pallet with the only significant departure being the leaves. It was a fun yet intricate composition with quite a few different things going on.

I really liked the idea of depicting the turtle as just another inanimate object drifting aimlessly about on the surface of the pond as though part of the debris.
