Beat The Heat by Derek Schneider

ARTIST NOTES: Heading to the coast in summer has always been part of our family life. As young child arriving in Australia on a hot summers day in 1972, i couldn't believe the sights and sounds of the ocean, and the families enjoying what to them must have seemed terribly familiar. Growing up we slowly familiarised ourselves and grew in confidence, swimming out to where the waves would break and learning to surf our way back to shore. As parents we watched our children in the shallows, then catch waves, and although each beach day was different we always drove home with the happiest thoughts. What an amazing country we live in. Painting these i wanted to frame everything against the aqua waters, the swirling water and the burning sands. it's more of an impression, focussing on the splashes of colour of the beach goers, trying to retain that joy, the movement, the action. My aim is to liven up a wall with fond memories and colour, something to gaze at when life gets in the way.

ARTIST BIO

Ever since i could clasp my chubby little fingers around a pencil i have felt a strong urge to create and capture, to bring ideas to life and to challenge my own abilities. As a teenager i exhibited at various local shows, winning prizes and encouragement. I graduated from Graphic Design at RMIT and landed my first job as an art director in an advertising agency. 35 years later i feel incredibly priviledged to have worked with so many "industry creatives" to create many memorable campaigns.

Throughout those years i continued to draw and develop ideas but only in the last 18 months has the opportunity arisen where i can now focus on painting, and in many ways it's a journey that is just beginning.

Working from a studio in Richmond i have been focussing on topics that bring joy to my life and hopefully the lives of others too. Having a "graphic" art background, i look to color and form to frame my paintings. Our beaches in summer and snow covered alps in winter provide that ideal setting for my art. Adopting a "birds-eye" view and a largely monochromatic backdrop means i can introduce bursts of color from beachgoers to skiers, whilst mainting a slightly unconventional and arguably more contemporary representation of the Australian landscape genre.

Keeping interior design trends in mind, my aim is introduce some of life's little pleasure into the modern home, and responses to date have been most encouraging. I look forward to seeing this journey develop.
